The term wedding photojournalism has been in vogue for the last decade. In essence it means the capture of the wedding events thought photography without any direction from the photographer. It is truly spontaneous and real photography that aims to document what really happens in your wedding day.
Nowadays many photographers use the term photojournalism to define any photograph that has not been directed or posed. However, true wedding photojournalism goes beyond simple snapshots, its purpose is to document the reality of the day and tell the story of the day with photos.
In real life it is difficult to find a true wedding photojournalist. In the strict sense if you manipulate or alter a wedding photograph by any means either electronically or by moving objects or using optical distortion then it is not longer reality. In addition, there is always a selective capture of events that may not be a true representation of what happened. In my opinion most wedding photographers claiming to be photojournalists photograph in a photojournalist like style or in style similar to photojournalism.
Hard core wedding photojournalists are a few. Because of photojournalism strict rules they would be opposed to pose any photographs including portraits and groups. If it does not happen during the wedding day it won’t be recorded.
In our experience some couples find that the reality captured by photojournalism can be too harsh and that often it doesn’t fit the romantic fantasy that they have of their wedding day. It is not to say that they don’t want the reality of their wedding day captured. They want a selective capture of that reality with emphasis on the romantic, emotional and beautiful aspect. In other words they want the photographer to document but also to glamorize the event in a real-beautiful way.
What is the best approach to wedding photography? I believe that the client has the last say when it comes to decide what style best fits their celebration, fantasies and expectations of their wedding day. When selecting a wedding photographer labels are meaningless. Instead take a close look at the wedding photographer portfolio and also see if their personality and style is a good match to your unique wedding celebration.
